Why I Walked Away From a Writing Client Who Wanted a Frankenstein Funnel
Hint: complexity kills conversions
I once had a client in the real estate space (an estate agent to us in the uk), who asked me to write content for his lead gen funnel.
Nightmare incoming!
At first glance, it looked impressive—layers of ads, landing pages and nurture sequences.
But once I started asking about core metrics—conversion rates, email open rates, LTV—he hadn't got a clue.
It was like pouring water into a bucket full of holes, (or pound coins down the drain).
I told him the truth about his Frankenstein funnel: “There’s no amount of conversion content I can write that’ll fix this.”
He didn’t like it.
I talked myself out of the project—because I knew it would never generate ROI.
And I’m honest. Even when it costs me. 😂
The Trap of Complexity
That experience stuck with me. Because at the time, my own content business was heading the same way.
I was spinning up fancy funnels, trying new tools every week, podcasting, blogging, stacking strategies on top of strategies. All in the name of “growth.”
But deep down, I wasn’t growing anything. Just exhausting myself.
The real shift came when I simplified—when I stripped it all back and built one solid habit:
Write. Publish. Repeat.
Here’s What That Looks Like Now (And Why It Works)
If you’ve got 30–60 minutes a day, you can build a writing business that compounds.
Here’s my simple daily workflow—no fluff, no funnels:
💪 Substack Weekday Article (30 mins)
Use the SALT formula:
→ Story: Something real that happened to you.
→ Analogy: Link to a deeper struggle your reader faces.
→ Lesson: One core insight or mindset shift with actionable tips
→ Tie-in: CTA to your offer or newsletter.
🔄 Repurpose Across Platforms (20 mins)
Same core message—tailored for:
→ Medium (usually a slightly modified version of the same article)
→ X - short post
→ Bluesky - as above
→ LinkedIn - as above
💬 Engage with Substack Notes (10 mins)
Leave 5 meaningful comments. Build relationships. Start conversations.
The Power of a Simple System
You don’t need to chase every new tactic. You don’t need a dozen platforms or a labyrinth of automation.
You need one story. One lesson. One system you can repeat with your eyes closed.
That’s what finally worked for me. And it can work for you too.
If you’re tired of funnel hacks and half-baked tactics—try writing every day instead.
Small reps. Big results.
